The summer season is right around the corner! Whether you live in a region like New York where the weather is just warming up, or you’re in a state like California that always feels the heat, it’s time to work on your “summer bod.”

Here are 10 tips for getting in shape just in time for the summer season:

1. Drink more water throughout the day.

The human body is composed of at least 60% water. Research shows we should be drinking about eight glasses of water (which equals about one liter of water) every single day. This is to help keep our body in its natural state and to flush toxins out at maximum efficiency.

2. Eat healthier meals and better snacks.

In addition to drinking more water, incorporate more vegetables, fruits, and protein into your diet. A quick Google search for metabolism boosting foods will show you what you can eat for an extra kick of fat burning power. 3. Cut out soda, candy, and other added sugars.

Although Doritos and ice cream are extremely delicious, they may not be the healthiest go-to options. Sure, you can have them in moderation every now and then, but don’t make it a habit.

Remember, abs aren’t made in the gym — they’re made in the kitchen! It’s all about what you eat.

4. Turn off the TV and put your phone down, and get active.

Technology makes our lives easier and help to keep us entertained… maybe a little too entertained. Instead of watching TV or Netflix or playing games on your phone, try substituting walk around the block in its place (heading to an unfamiliar place? Research the neighborhood before you go to make sure it’s safe).

5. Wear a fitness tracker to stay motivated.

Technology doesn’t always have to be a burden to our physical health! In fact, it can actually hold accountable by notifying us whenever we’ve sat too long and need to get up and get moving, like the Fitbit fitness tracker does. These wearable tech accessories can count your steps, monitor your heart rate, and track your exercise activity — and ultimately keep you motivated!

6. Start a fitness program or go to the gym.

Sign up for a gym membership or start watching workout videos in your home. If the gym isn’t your thing, there are several at-home programs to choose from, one of which we like at Top 5 is BeachBody.

7. Find a buddy who will keep you on track.

Getting fit doesn’t have to be boring or done on your own. Find a friend who wants to join you on your fitness journey and keep each other on track! Go to the gym together, meal prep together, or go for bike rides together.

8. Think about your long term health.

If not just for summer, do it for life. Rather than shaping up in time for the beach and the warmer weather in the short term, think about adjusting your habits to improve your overall health in the long term.

9. Don’t fall for diet fads.

Diets may be good for a little while, but they’re not necessarily healthy. Doing detox drinks for 5 days in a row can make you lose 10 pounds… however, it won’t keep the weight off or help you get healthier quicker than working at it the right way with good food and exercise.

10. Don’t compare yourself to others.

Every body is unique. You may never look like a Victoria’s Secret Angel or a professional football player, and that’s totally okay. As long as you’re doing what’s right for YOU, you’re on a path to a successful, happy, and healthy summer and life.
